RIP dearest Ammachi (aka Poptain)

Image
My grandmother was a top ranking student until grade 9, after which her studies were abruptly discontinued & she was married to my grandfather at age 16.  She loved to talk about her keen interest to study, her father and her hometown of Coonoor. Her stories were of a carefree childhood turned into rushed adulthood, when she had to figure out cooking and managing a family. She stayed up a whole night sowing just so she could stitch a dress for my mother (a 2yr old) that she couldn't afford to buy & prove a point. She was a very determined person.  Most of my favourite memories are from when she was still young and able (or should I say extremely capable). She was a very lively person. She loved dogs, and some rather strange pets she had (including a rooster).. she would get her dogs dressed up with sunglasses and a potu at times. She was intelligent, hardworking and did a lot for all of us when she could. She was an amazing host,...

The Expat life chose me!

Image
I moved to Fujairah, UAE from Madras, India in the year 1992. I was 5 years old. My first memory of this move, was being reunited with my dad who had moved a little earlier to settle into his new job.  I loved our new home, the new city, the park right around the corner & mainly the fact that we were all together again. Do not recollect missing my school or anyone else! I had all my people with me. This is clearly a great age to move somewhere new 😊  We lived in Fujairah, UAE for a few years -  the most magical years of my life. It was a small town, a small parish & we were so close with all our friends & neighbours. The doors were always open for us kids to hang out & play. It was a time & place where it was safe for kids to get on their bikes and venture out alone. I made sure to be out to play at 4pm sharp every single day & be back at 6pm aka sunset - no permission to stay out beyond that. I'd then wait eagerly for my dad to get back home...

Marriages and KUNG FU

Image
The two words are synonymous! Let me explain. My husband and I have been married for almost six months now. He is a peace loving soul and would like for us to never ever fight. My reaction to that 'want' apart from some eye rolling is one single 'pfffft'. Now, before I go on, I'd just like to say for myself that I would also love peace, who wouldn't?  Now that we've established that, let me also say that I'm very short tempered. My patience levels are low, and I react. I'm bad at hiding, even for over five minutes how I feel about a situation. SO bad in fact that I don't even need to say a single word. My face says it all! And my husband for one, knows exactly when that expression changes as well (he's a quick learner). He gets upset that I'm upset now and instead of calmly working through the reaction as we should do as full grown adults we panic and say things that have no relevance. We get angry and say hurtful thin...

Romantic comedy, why?

Image
Have you noticed how the end of every romantic comedy ends making you believe that everyone falls in love in the end somehow.  Suddenly,  two characters in a fictional  movie is 'everyone'. And you would think that considering you are the leading lady in your life this should be your ending too.  The worst part is you can't even blame the storyteller. I mean he/she is showing you the whole picture, so many characters whose roles you will probably fit into..the colleague, the friend, the neighbor who even towards the end is still watching tv, eating popcorn or hooking up with yet another wrong guy which doesn't really show a conclusive end to her tale is still portrayed.. but  is obviously not the part you signed up for in YOUR life right?  Yet, time and time again all you want to do on a depressing night is pop in a rom-com Dvd. Why? a) You repeatedly lead yourself to believe you are still mid-way through your story and your happ...

Sexual Assault is NOT Ok.

Image
We live in a society where sex is not an openly discussed subject. Sexual assault is never discussed in a family. In the past few weeks, we have seen a tremendous rise in the social sharing of articles on rape and sexual assault in response to the anger and stirring the Delhi rape incident has caused.  The more I read about sexual crimes around the world and in India I  feel a deep sense of grief for the victims and a deeper sense of anger towards the accused. Today, we are a nation outraged by an incident that is shocking in the brutality of it, the response of our "protectors" & the response of our government to such an incident.  Stop to wonder why this response? To our "protectors" and government this is just one more incident among the numerous sexual assault cases reported, some perhaps more  brutal and gruesome than this crime. It makes me sick to think of the cases that are not recorded, the cases where the woman is blamed, the ca...

Friends - If only for a while.

In the course of our lives we meet different people. Some become close friends, some acquaintances, some lovers, some well with just no name for the relationship. When I look back, I wonder if there was a point to any of those various relationships that brought in people into my life who today seem nothing more than a distant memory & I've just hit a quarter of a century recently so I'm probably going to meet a lot more people who will be but passing friends. So what is the point of these kind of friendships? Just a bunch of people who are put into your life for no apparent reason? Why am I thinking of this today? Well I get friend requests on FB from people and I remember who they were in my life, note "were" as they no longer are. I look into my existing list and I find more people who "were". Its not that I don't care enough to be in touch or that they were not that significant for me to have them on my whatsapp, chat list or phone...

Too much of anything

Seems like forever since I wrote. Ironic since I write for work every single day. For some reason a deadline makes anything you love lose its essence. I wonder if a coffee taster savors every sip at work the way every coffee lover does each morning? Does a singer really love to sing the same (popular) song that brought him/her fame every fortnight at concerts? The magic of composing the song is far from the reality of re-singing it like a broken record. I'm the kind of person who, when I fall in love with a song tend to obsess and listen to it over and over till I reach a certain point when I think the song isn't so great after all. I wonder if a career in what you love can make you actually dislike it at some point?  ok lets be practical, any career will make you dislike it at some point ;) The logic makes sense even if we were to put it into a relationship cycle. Boy girl fall madly in love - can't get enough of each other and decide to get married - then they ...

Chennai

Image
Perfectly regular day at work today, was in the middle of writing an  urgent proposal when  I heard a car honk and then another.. one after the other persistently and for a flash instant my mind raced to Chennai and back! In this city people hardly honk. I can hear cars from my flat if the balcony is open, but it is nothing but a  constant buzz from the 21st level..the few honks are lost in transition I guess. I wonder what it is we associate with a place or a memory perhaps? For me a city is its noises and smells. Just two simple things.. Of course people always talk about how a place being scenic or filled with memories is the primary association with a city... strangely for me its the sounds and smells [not taking into account people of course because then otherwise its all about who's there and *cough* at times the absence of some that make one smile in relief ;)] If I were to take two cities I've lived in Chennai and Bangalore; and brought in one of my favor...

Lazy Fridays

Image
Friday is my favorite day in the week! Not because I always have something awesome planned for the weekend.. quite the opposite in fact! Friday is my DO NOTHING day! Its a day I spend most of my time in bed :D No I don't just sleep the whole day cmon! gimme some credit.. I'm not that lazy ;) I just like the comfort of knowing that today I don't have to go out for any reason or use other furniture.. you see I have this principle (YES Principle :P) that when one can sit one must not stand and when one can lie down then one jusst must not sit ;) And on fridays I am a woman of principle! Friday is my wake up as late as you can day.. maybe miss breakfast n get serious about brunch! Eat too much and get back in bed for a short siesta or check on my downloads.. read my favorite magazine coincidentally also called FRIDAY! (Can you blame me???) *Sigh* at the food section and dream of being a food critic or journalist traveling the world.,, have 5 dogs of my own.. use a horse to get ...

On love, dreams and loss

I think the worst part of young romance is that; yes, they fade away because of a simple cause like age, but unfortunate still is that you lose a friend. Probably one that you could have had for life. That is the worst part really, the departure of a true friend. On losing friends, The loss of a friend. By death or as bad when you are both alive and not willing to kick ball together. I have lost more than one friend not because of death. Fortunately, I have lost none to death ; so I cannot truly say which is worse by experience. What I have experienced is that we allow different parts of our personality to come alive with different friends and when the friendship dies; sadly, that part of us does too. On Dreams, Dreams are a mystery. Are they in some strange way reality? Are they even connected to reality? Or are they just an interpretation of what we really want? For all we know they could just be random thoughts the mind brings together when it gets bored of the sleeping ...

HORRORSCOPE !!!

Image
HAVE YOU HEARD??? Apparently the earth has shifted from its axis due to the gravitational pull of the moon and changed the way the stars are aligned! :( Why is this a big deal? Its a HUGE deal coz it just confused all our personalities in a flash! Yesterday I was an Arien and today I'm a Piscean :-/ From the RAM to a fish !! ughhh.. We're yet to hear if the Chinese horoscope has changed too.. maybe I'm no longer a cute rabbit! :( I may have just turned into a rat or a snake :-/ *gulp* I mean what does this mean? Does this mean that all our personalities are changing now? or were changed when the stars moved! I don't really know why I'm this upset! I feel stripped of my personality! Yes I did obsess over my knowledge of the signs and judged every person I met according to their date of birth which now seems soo absurd! Not to mention all the people who I've tortured to read the book and forced to believe even if they did not want to :-/ I'm sure they all t...

Mood Swings!

Image
I’m in such a fantastic mood that I can’t even describe!! I wonder if emotions are a deciding factor in our personalities; perhaps they decide who we are even when we don’t realize it! As I type this I feel I am playing the piano to coffee and cigarettes playing in my earphones & smiling!! Yes smiling to a song that usually saddens my heart! & The thoughts are flowing yes.. A little too fast for my typing skills! :/ and yet I couldn’t care less.. I’m loving this, this flow of words… of thoughts! Strange how a mood can make something regular seem spectacular! I’m still not sure what brought on this mood! Let me see, I had chocolate chip cookies that crumbled in my mouth to give way to melting chocolate beads! I had a pack of chilli flavoured lays and coca cola ! Oh oh or maybe just maybe its coz my hair smells so heavenly today! I recommend the new Sunsilk series :D Oh well it was probably the coke! Whatever it was I feel like dancing or going to a karaoke bar! :...

New Year Diaries

Image
I wrote my first diary entry when I was 6 or 7. When sentence construction and spellings were a struggle! Since then, every New year meant a new diary! I remember my very first diary entry, when I thought I had to introduce myself & my family (go figure!) because I had just met the diary of course ;) My diary was my secret keeper those days! And I chose to write my secrets in the most unusual places! Inside my cupboard! - The side where clothes hang, I'd sit under the coats and dresses, with my teddy bear & a lamp! Yes a LAMP which had to be connected & I would sit and write in the faint glow, even though I could go out and write in the sunshine/tubeshine! :P The top of the same cupboard was my other spot to write about the day's grievances - which was either my mom not being nice [in response to me breaking a vase or some other expensive piece with my so called 'indoor squash game' ;)] or a fight with my sister who may have refused to play one of my various...

THE OPPOSITE SEX

Image
Have you noticed that on an average, some of your most interesting conversations are those you have with a person of the opposite sex? I don’t even mean romantic conversations. Even in platonic relationships. Is it because we are so different from each other? I think the excitement lies in the fact that the two genders, although thought to be so different from each other are in fact so alike. And since we have a pre-conceived notion that we are meant to be so un-like; the sudden revelation that we can be so alike excites!! From the little experience I’ve had I think we are all very alike. “Men are from mars, women are from Venus.” We all love to believe this. Maybe it’s true when we decide to be complex creatures craving for attention in a romantic relationship. But in a platonic one where the bar is set much lower (I hope), it’s much easier to just be yourself and less of some strange erratic person because you are: a) In no way trying to impress the person in every way possible and w...

Choice!

Image
NOTE : Hey guys!! Its been soo long since I wrote here! Strangely, I have not been inspired at all! :P Except that I wanna say Thank you to the reading audience even when I'm not writing! Had the maximum blog views this month! And people from UK, Ireland,Norway,Russia and Dominica, do write back! I'm very exited that you guys are reading me coz I don't know any of you personally I'm sure and there's a lot of readership from yr countries! :) The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man. - George Bernard Shaw When I read this quote I couldn't help relating it to an article I read a few weeks back on the number of choices we have to and need to make these days; with even something like takeaway coffee! There's decaf, cream, sugar-brown or white.. every little aspect you have a choice! Walk into a store to pick up juice; even if you...

The Truth about CATS and DOGS

Image
My dog Teddy (as a pup) was extremely fond of cats! Unfortunately for him, the feeling wasn't mutual! His favorite hang out was our hall window where he'd reach up and sight-see, standing on his hind paws and his head would move left right, scanning the entire place! The funniest thing was his paws would ache after a while and he'd get down, but his curiosity always got the better of him! Squirrels were a big attraction (chipmunks actually) and cats! You see we lived in an apartment, luckily on the ground floor, and the neighbors on the side had a huge backyard with fruit trees and the squirrels would go up and down the coconut trees (I have to admit even I couldn't resist watching them sometimes) . The house behind our building had cats! Ample supply! And the mother cat seemed to think having litter after litter was her sole purpose in life! When I'd take him out, Teddy's first task was to chase after the kittens who managed to climb the wall and look down on ...

WHEN TRUTH LIES

Image
"Truth is still absolute. Believe that. Even when that truth is hard and cold, and more painful than you've ever imagined. And even when that truth is more cruel than any lie." We all say that we want to know the truth, the whole truth, in any situation in our lives. I think we're lying most of the time. Especially wen we're in the wrong, (and at some point we all are)and the last thing we need is a third person pointing out the facts(I say third because a second person seems to have more of a right, and in this situation everyone is a third person). The bare naked truth that we've tried so hard to hide.Of course, when someone else lies to us we demand an explanation and expect the truth, if we do not get this we lose trust in the other person. And trust, the way it entwines itself with lies is intriguing. If a lie is never uncovered it can go on to remain the truth,so then what makes a lie different? Sometimes I think we're happier in oblivion.Because trut...

Day 6 :) ARRIVALS!!!

Image
I started my day early today, and was at the airport way before my mom's plane could land and the flight was delayed! So,I just sat around watching the display board and everyone coming and going. I love ARRIVALS :) I just love to watch people meeting after a gap, and you can even gauge the possible duration of separation and the intimacy between the person arriving and the receiving party. You may have noticed that a fair share of people are so shy to display their emotions and yet something as small as the lighting up of their faces gives them away in an instant:)Its sweet! I sat there watching and smiling, and smiling some more :D Who ever said distance makes the heart grow fonder knew what he was talking about! So there was this particular man who was really restless in the waiting area with me, he kept peeping through the glass, looking at his watch and the display TV so frequently I was starting to get a little nervous! I thought something must be wrong! After a good tw...

I'M BACK!! With a delayed day 5 ;)

Image
Well I dunno if you missed me but I certainly missed writing here ! Been doing a lotta writing this month but nothing like writing here, in my own space, where I can use any font any word any any anything I want :) Kinda makes me think that you never realize how much freedom you have unless you have it taken away from you! :)We're a bunch of ungrateful creatures us humans!! :D hmmm! So how have you been?? This month has been rather disappointing..the job hunt is fruitless.. its like I only look up trees that are dry and ready to cause a forest fire, not give out fruits of any kind :P hmphtt.. In other words I hate waiting :( But then I am enjoying my new part time job..yes yes I am no longer a jobless bum :)and learning a whole lotta new things!! And well, I have definitely learnt to be patient and the wild horse in me has decided to put the saddle on!he he Have you ever felt at some point in your life, that everything is going soo well with something (maybe a job or grades or ...
